Coming out of the height of the pandemic, the BGC Arts Center is staging its 2022 version of its flagship program, the Pinoy Playlist Music Festival (PPMF). Coinciding with the holiday season, it is naturally themed “Paskong Pinoy” with the program centered on giving musical tributes to the 2022 Ryan Cayabyab PPMF awardees for their lifelong excellent contributions to Filipino music. The awardees are Ms. Pilita Corrales for musical performance, Mr. Jose Mari Chan for musical composition, Ms. Babsie Molina as a pioneer session vocalist and vocal arranger, and Mr. Jonathan Velasco in the field of choral music.
“The uncertainties of the lingering pandemic could not enable us to stage a full-fledged festival but we as PPMF, wanted to still reach out from our core value. So we mined some excellent contributions to Filipino music and built a program punctuated with tributes to these special musical artists. And of course, it is Kumukuti-kutitap season, so it brightens the celebration even more”, says National Artist Maestro Ryan Cayabayab, who is one of the curators of PPMF and who will be on the piano throughout the show.
Some of the performers for Paskong Pinoy Playlist are: Ateneo Chamber Singers, Mandaluyong Children’s Choir, The CompanY, Bituin Escalante, Arman Ferrer, Martin Nievera, Jackie Lou Blanco and professional session singers namely: Olive Isidro, Eugene Cailao, Sushi Reyes, Kitchie Valdellon Molina, Maxie Goloy, Elise Goloy Cortez, Zebedee Zuniga, Manolo Tanquilut, Anna Innocencio and Elke Saison Ortiz and more surprise guests.
Noel Ferrer, PPMF Curator, says “we are grateful that we are able to reveal, through the Ryan Cayabyab awards, the different layers of musical contributions that make up the terrain of Filipino music.” Moy Ortiz, PPMF Curator who came up with the seed idea of PPMF, said “the awards also represent the layers that Ryan Cayabyab, the musical genius, is made of. It is so important for us to honor these special people who have rendered those layers as permanent parts that animate our Filipino musical soul.”
Maria Isabel Garcia, Managing Director of Bonifacio Art Foundation Inc. (BAFI) – the foundation that conceived and operates the BGC Arts Center says “PPMF will always be alive- shapeshifting as it responds to the peculiarities of the times but it will always resonate with the Filipino musical soul. Paskong PPMF 2022 is guaranteed to do that to you.”
